This exceptionally rare Snuff Box is silver gilt and realistically modelled as a Fox Head, with textured surface to simulate the fur of the fox and displaying pointed ears and wide eyes, unusually inset with emeralds.  The engine turned cover displays a floral and foliate thumb piece and rectangular cartouche engraved with script initials below the Coronet of an Earl.  This piece is of an exceptional weight and is very well marked on the bezel of the main body and the inside of the cover.  The interior also displays very fine deep gilding.  Fox head Snuff Boxes are exceptionally scarce, as very few were made, especially by these very rare silversmiths.  An example is shown in "Silver Boxes" by Eric Delieb, page 95 and he emphasises their rarity.  Another is contained within the World famous "Lion Collection" and is illustrated on page 230 of the catalogue.
