The Mug has a circular tapering form and stands on an applied spreading foot decorated with reeding. The main body displays a central horizontal raised girdle and an everted rim. The front is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a foliate scroll cartouche. The Mug has a scroll handle and is fully marked on the side under the rim.
With regard to the Armorial, these are the differenced arms of Sir Jacob JACOBSEN (1680-1735) who was born in Hamburg, Germany. The earlier ancestry of the family would appear to be in Antwerp, Belgium. In 1717/8 he was Knighted (KB) when he was identified as a merchant in London and Director of the South Sea Company. In 1704 he had married Anne HEATHCOTE (1682-1737) of London, daughter of Gilbert HEATHCOTE (1653-1733) of Chesterfield, Derbyshire by Esther RAYNER (1658-1714).
Robert Lovell was apprenticed to Timothy Ley, another fine silver mug maker. He entered his first mark on 3rd August, 1702 and had workshops in Maiden Lane when this piece was made.
