£1,750

This very fine silver gilt vinaigrette is broad rectangular in form and is decorated on the sides, base and cover with engine turned designs.  The outer border of the cover is cast and chased with scrolls, foliate motifs and flower heads, as is the thumb piece.  The cover also displays a gold central cartouche engraved with contemporary script initials.  The cover opens up to reveal a finely gilded interior and grille pierced and engraved with pluming scrolls and a central flower head.  The interior is very well marked, as is the underside of the grille.

Charles Rawlings either alone, or with William Summers, made some of the finest snuff boxes and vinaigrettes during this period and this is clearly seen with this box.
