The Salt Cellars stand on a stepped oval pedestal foot which is decorated with reeding and gadrooning. The main body is "Boat" shaped in form and rises to a gadrooned rim, with "Onslow" scroll ends. The Salts have a gilded interior and are each engraved with a contemporary Crest. The Cellars are of a very good weight, are of the finest quality and each is fully marked on the foot. This crest is that of Acland who were an important West country family but one with many branches.
A good possibility is Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 9th Baronet of Killerton (1752-1794) who inherited the family estates and married the daughter of the banker Sir Richard Hoare in 1785 (he is also a good candidate for the pair of Crossley stuffing spoons- and one I have). He was a prominent hunter (101 stags in 1794) and a member of the North Devon Militia (Captain in 1787, Major in 1790 and Lieutenant Colonel in 1793).
