DUBLIN. A George III Snuffer Tray made in Dublin in 1802 by John Stoyte.

£1,400

The Tray has a broad rectangular form, with incuse ends and raised sides with reeded rim.  The sides are also pierced with a band of arch work and each end displays a stylised floral motif in an oval.  The main body is engraved with an outer band of foliate motifs enclosed by prick dot bands.  The centre is engraved with a Lion Rampant Crest with the motto "Courage" engraved on a banner above.  The Crest is surrounded by a pretty prick dot and scroll oval cartouche.  This piece is in excellent condition and is well marked on the reverse.

Snuffer Trays are rare from Ireland and would have been used to stand a pair of candle snuffer scissors on.  These can be used on the dining table today for chocolates etc, or decoratively on a table.  John Stoyte had workshops at 15, Chancery Lane, Dublin when this piece was made.  He was elected Freeman 1789-1805, Warden 1796-7 and to the prestigious position of Master of the Goldsmiths Company 1799-1800.
