The Candlesticks stand on a stepped, shaped, base decorated with reeding which rises to a circular sunken well. The defined baluster stems are decorated with reeding and the shaft and spool shaped sockets display horizontal girdles around them. The base is engraved with a contemporary Crest. The candlesticks are in exceptional condition, with crisp marks and are of a very good weight and colour. Work by Susannah Hatfield is extremely rare and her mark, in a widow's lozenge, was entered on 14th April, 1740. Her mark is shown in "London Goldsmith's 1697-1837" by A.G. Grimwade, mark 2541. She was the widow of the silversmith Charles Hatfield who was apprentice to the important Huguenot silversmith David Willaume, He was subordinate Goldsmith to the King 1723-39. His work is comparatively rare, however it is always of a high standard and shows Huguenot influence, as is natural from his apprenticeship. This fine quality is also seen with these candlesticks which are in excellent condition and of the finest quality in design and production. Sussanah entered her mark in 1740, to continue the running of the workshops after the death of her husband Charles.
