The slightly baluster main body is perfectly modelled as a barrel with vertical engraved lines to simulate the planks of the barrel and wide raised horizontal bands to simulate the metal bands holding the wooden staves in place. The plain scroll handle is attached to the cover with an unusual pierced "chair back" thumb piece. The flat hinged cover has a serpentine shaped front and the interior is finely gilded. The Tankard is fully marked on the side of the main body and on the cover. Barrel Tankards are scarce by any silversmith, however they are especially rare from the Bateman workshops. The base is engraved with the number 32, which must refer to a collection inventory number.
Height, to the top of the thumb piece: 7.6 inches, 19cm.
Length, including the handle: 7 inches, 17cm.
Base Diameter: 3.5 inches, 8.75cm.
Weight: 28oz.
