An important George III SILVER GILT AND GOLD SNUFF BOX MADE IN LONDON IN 1813 BY DANIEL HOCKLEY

The Snuff Box is broad rectangular in form, with engine turned sides and base. The cover is finely inset with a cast 22 carat plaque chased with a finely detailed view of Neptune riding the waves in his chariot, being pulled by two horses. The scene has a 9 carat gold frame and a glazed plaque above. This is all surrounded by a chased border of scrolls and flower heads, on a matted ground. The front of the box displays a serpentine shaped thumb piece.
The interior of the cover displays the following historical inscription:
"Presented to Mr Henry Simpson, Churchwarden, of St. Martin's in the Fields, By 24 Householders, In admiration of his courage in standing trial against a self elected Vestry - and for his talent and perseverance in bringing it to a successful issue thereby restoring the ancient rights and priviledges of the rate payers, which had been withheld more than 200 years.
December 20th 1834 "
St Martin's in the Fields is located in Trafalgar Square and is referred to as the Royal Family's Church.
The box is of an exceptional gauge and weight and is in excellent condition. It is most unusual to find a cast gold Classical plaque inset into a box at this date. Daniel Hockley was an exceptional maker, who made the finest boxes at this date.
