This very fine example has a fig shaped bowl and hexagonal stem which terminates in a baluster seal top, beautifully chased with lobes and palely gilded. The top of the seal is scratch engraved with a cross motif. The bowl is very well marked with the Leopards Head Crowned and the other three marks are very well struck on the stem. This is an exceptional example, with good bowl and colour and comes from a very desirable reign, especially as it falls just within the 16th century. William Cawdell was a prolific spoon maker, one of the finest of the period, and was apprentice to Patrick Brue in 1575. By 1599, Cawdells business had developed into one of the largest spoon making workshops in the capital.
