This extremely rare Snuff Box is modelled as a Shoe and beautifully engraved with prick dot bands and wriggle work to simulate the ribbons and lacework on the shoe. The front and heel also display a trellis work band with flower heads and foliate motifs. This box, unusually, has two compartments, the larger one for Snuff and the smaller one, in the heel, most probably for patches used to decorate the face. The larger cover is engraved with a set of contemporary script initials, these being of the original Georgian owner. The hinges are finely concealed with an engraved band and the interiors are beautifully gilded. The Shoe is in exceptional condition and is of the finest quality, being marked in no fewer than three locations.
This form of shoe snuff box, in silver, is very unusual from this date, as many were produced much later during the late Victorian/Edwardian periods. A very desirable Collectors’ box.
