The Snuff Box is silver gilt and has a deep rectangular form with rounded ends. The cover, base and sides display engine turned engraving and the hinged cover displays a raised chased floral scroll rim and similar thumb piece at the front. The cover is centred by a gold cartouche engraved with the initials CH in Gothic script. The interior displays exceptional gilding and a full set of hallmarks in the base. The cover is well marked with the maker's mark, sterling mark and date letter. Charles Rawlings was one of the finest box makers working in London at this date and this box shows the characteristics of his fine work.
