The Taperstick has an unusually shaped stepped square base, with incuse scroll corners. The base also has a circular well which is also unusually engraved with a contemporary Armorial, surrounded by a drapery cartouche. The baluster shaped stem is decoarted with reeding and stylised shell motifs and the spool shaped socket is also decorated with reeding. This example is very well marked in the foot. James Gould was a specialist maker of Candlesticks of fine quality and had workshops in Gutter Lane when this piece was made.
