This exceptional Wine Label is cast and silver gilt and is modelled as two crossed vines, with grapes, tied at the top with a ribbon. The vines surround a drapery banner which is pierced for PORT. Unusually this example has an oval cartouche above which is engraved with the cipher of Queen Charlotte, below the Sovereigns crown. The label has a substantial chain, is very well marked and is in exceptional condition.
Sophia Charlotte, 1744-1818, was the wife of King George III and Queen of Great Britain & Ireland from her marriage in 1761, until her death in 1818. Her eldest son, the Prince Regent, claimed her jewels after her death, however the rest of her property was sold at auction, by Christies, from May-August, 1819.
This style of label is not seen often and is of the finest quality. To find an example with such an important Royal Provenance attached to it, is very desirable. A portrait of the Queen is attached.
