This superbly hand engraved silver gilt Vinaigrette is modelled as a book and the front is beautifully engraved with a spray of forget me nots surrounded by a frame and a border of scroll work. The base is similarly decorated with the frame containing two exotic birds. The spine is engraved with cross designs and foliate scrolls and Forget me Not 1845 to simulate the title of the book on the spine. The interior displays a hand pierced and engraved grille decorated with plumes. These rare boxes are widely acknowledged to be the finest of all the book vinaigrettes and examples are very scarce. A near identical example is illustrated in Silver Boxes by Eric Delieb, 2002 Edition, Plate 171.
