The Vinaigrette is broad rectangular in form with serpentine shaped sides engraved with plain crescents and engine turning.  The base displays different bands of horizontal engine turning around a central vacant cartouche with scroll surround. The cover shows an exceptionally rare crisp castle top scene in high relief depicting a view of John Nash’s design for Buckingham Palace, with the Marble Arch in the foreground.  The influence for this view is taken from a watercolour of 1846 by Joseph Nash, from St James’s Park.  Queen Victoria had the Palace altered significantly and charged the architect Edward Blore ( 1787-1879), with the design of a front wing enclosing the Palace forecourt.  Although the Marble Arch was in situ during the construction of the new facade, it was clearly at odds with the new addition and was taken down in 1850 and re-erected in its current position at Cumberland Gate, on the north-eastern edge of Hyde Park, in 1852.  The scene also shows the lake in St James’s Park in the foreground and a bold frame of raised scrolls and flower heads.  The cast thumb piece is also decorated with scrolls and flower heads.

The interior displays deep original gilding and a grille pierced and engraved with pluming foliate sprays and flower heads.  The box is very well marked in the base and on the underside of the cover, in addition to a clear maker’s on the underside of the grille.  The Vinaigrette is of the finest quality in terms of design and production, which would be expected from this maker.  This is the first Buckingham Palace Vinaigrette which we have offered over all of our dealing years, such are their rarity.  We sold a Nathaniel Mills Buckingham Palace Snuff Box in 2010, which is illustrated in “Investing in Silver” by Eric Delieb, page 98.
