This very rare item opens up to provide two beakers which were modelled and decorated to simulate a barrel. It is thought that these were used when travelling and also as stirrup cups to toast the hunt at the hunt meet. The quality of this piece is exceptional and the gilded interiors are in very good condition. Both ends are very well marked and this piece is in excellent condition and is of a very good gauge. This is the first time we have had a double beaker made by all three members of the Bateman family and, an identical example, by Peter & William Bateman is shown in "Hester Bateman" by David Shure, and he also emphasises that these items are rarities from the Bateman workshops. The quality of production is even shown with the engraved roundel at the front, so that they are placed back together in exactly the right position. Peter, Ann & William Bateman were in partnerships from 1800-1805, when Ann retired. As the partnership was short lived there is relatively little silver in existence which bears the mark of the three members of the Bateman family working together.
