The Basket is of typically Irish design and stands on a shaped pedestal foot which is decorated with bright cutting. The large paneled main body has a reeded rim, as does the arched handle, and is engraved with an upper band of flower heads in ovals and trailing foliage. The front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial and the reverse with a Crest, with initials below. Both are surrounded by a crossed branch cartouche. The Basket is in excellent condition and is very well marked in the foot. The Arms and Crest are those of Hammington of Dover, County Kent, impaling those of Johnstone of Ireland. The Hammingtons were prominent merchants in Kent.
