This very rare box is silver gilt and cast and has an unusual deep, broad rectangular, form. Each of the sides display an outer frame decorated with roundels and bright cutting on a matted ground. The larger sides also display unusual geometric designs including flower heads in hexagonal cartouches. Each of the sides also displays an oval medallion, three depicting ships in sail, some in harbours and some out at sea. The medallion on the cover depicts two running dogs in a rural landscape. The two smaller side medallions show buildings in a rural landscape. The quality and weight of this box is quite exceptional, as would be expected from this special maker. We feel that John Linnit is copying the designs of similar boxes of the period which were made of gold. This piece is in excellent condition and is very well marked in the base and on the underside of the cover.
John Linnit produced exceptional Snuff Boxes during his career and had workshops in Craven Buildings, Drury Lane, when this particular piece was made. He was a Royal Box maker and his work is well represented in the Royal Collection of King Charles III.
