This is the first time we have seen this type of box made in silver. This example is circular in form and decorated on the cover and base with concentric engine turning. The sides are also engraved with engine turned designs, enclosed by plain, protruding, horizontal bands. This is an exceptionally well made box, as the cover rotates around to reveal a small shaped opening, so that a reduced amount of snuff can be taken when offered around to others. This is why they are referred to as a "Miser's" Snuff Box. The Box is in excellent condition and has a finely gilded interior. It is marked in no less than four different places, such is the superior attention to detail. Charles Rawlings was one of the finest box makers of this period and this is shown in the quality of this piece.
Diameter: 2.6 inches, 6.5 cm.
