An extremely rare George III Kitchen Nutmeg Grater made in London in 1820 by John Reilly.

Sold

The Kitchen nutmeg grater is modelled in the unusual cylindrical form and the sides are inset with steel graters pierced with concentric designs.  The top displays a very unusual deep bowl, with reeded arched handle where the nutmeg could be placed.  The base displays a bottom opening, with exceptional hinge, which is engraved with a contemporary Crest.  The base opening was used when the nutmegs needed to be stored, when the grater was not in use.  This piece is of the finest quality and in most excellent condition.  It is very well marked on the hinged base and the lower mounts.  If you look up inside there is also a third set of marks on the underside of the top dish.  As intimated, this is a very rare design of kitchen nutmeg grater and a similar example is shown in the catalogue of the Robert & Meredith Green Collection.

Height: 4.25 inches, 10.63 cm.

Diameter of the base: 1.75 inches, 4.38 cm.
