A very unusual George III Bat Wing Wirework Basket made in Sheffield in 1788 by Richard Morton & Company.

The Basket stands on a navette shaped, stepped, pedestal foot. The main body has a reeded bat wing rim and consists of a number of joined wirework hoops. The arched handle is also decorated with reeding and this piece has a blue glass liner and is fully marked on the foot. This is a very unusual design for such an early date, however Sheffield were known for their innovative designs in the early years after the establishment of the assay office. The basket and liner are in excellent condition.

Height to the top of the handle: 5.6 inches, 14 cm.
