A very rare set of four George III Sweetmeat Baskets made in London in 1794 by Henry Chawner

Each basket stands on a cut cornered rectangular pedestal foot decorated with flat fluting. The main bodies are of "Boat" shaped form and rise to a reeded rim. The lower body is decorated with bat wing fluting below a pretty band of engraved wave motifs and foliate engraved designs on ovals. The front of each piece is engraved with a crossed branch cartouche tied with ribbons, containing a contemporary Crest. The Crest is that of the Moore family. All baskets are in excellent condition, have blue glass liners and are marked just under the rim. This is the first time we have seen a set of baskets of this design and they were most probably for sweetmeats. The quality of design and production is exceptional, as would be expected from this premier silversmith.
