This exceptional box is of a deep broad rectangular form with rounded ends. The sides are unusually engraved with panels of floral garlands and vacant shields, flanked by stylised foliate motifs. The base is decorated with sunburst pattern with a central raying flower head, contained within a rectangular canted frame. The cover has a finely concealed hinge and is decorated with sunburst pattern, floral sprays, raying flower heads and a central vacant rectangular cartouche, with cut corners. The interior displays very fine gilding and a full set of marks in the base and on the underside of the cover. The underside of the cover is also engraved with the contemporary inscription "S C, the gift of His Grandson, C W H. This is one of the finest snuff boxes we have offered by Samuel Pemberton and is in quite excellent condition.
