The Ewer is of Neo Classical form and stands on a domed circular beaded foot. The main body is vase shaped and is decorated with various beaded bands, as is the rim. The high domed cover terminates in a beaded cast urn finial. The scroll handle is covered with its original wicker and displays a silver scroll end. The main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial and Crest above, all surrounded by a detailed cartouche of scrolls and prick dot bands. The Armorial is that of Castleton quartering Prenne and Wentworth impaling Bardolf. The crest is that of Castleton.
The Ewer is fully marked in the foot and with the sterling mark on the inside of the cover. This piece is in excellent condition and is of the finest quality in terms of both design and production. Charles Wright made quality Ewers and Coffee Pots and was apprentice to Thomas Whipham, entering his first mark in October 1757, in partnerships with Whipham. He had workshops at 5, Ave Maria Lane, when this Ewer was made. He must have been very well regarded as he was elected Warden of the Goldsmiths Company 1783-85.
