This very rare piece stands on an applied ring foot which is decorated with reeding. The main body is of a good size and has a slightly baluster form. The lower section is decorated with swirl flutes and lobes below a punched band of semi-circles and foliate motifs. The central plain section rises to a raised, reeded, girdle with an arrow head band below, with star motifs at the end of each arrow head. The top of the main body displays an applied, reeded, everted rim. The scroll side handle is made in two sections and seamed down the middle and decorated with a tapering beaded band. The detachable, pull-off, cover is modelled in a stepped design with an outer reeded band, which rises to a swirling band of flutes and lobes. The plain platform top rises to a cast bell shaped finial with layered foliate motifs below. The Mug is in excellent condition, with a good colour. It is fully marked in the foot and with the maker’s mark on the cover. It is of a quite exceptional gauge of silver.
John Spackman I was apprentice to Roger Stephens and was free 1st September, 1676. His mark is often seen on Porringers, Tankards and Mugs, as it would appear that he specialised in this area. He had workshops on the Stand in London, when this piece was made. The maker's mark shown on the base and cover is shown on page 136 of Jackson's "Silver & Gold Marks".
Mugs with detachable covers are extremely rare, especially of this size and design. We have only seen one other over all of the years and one was also sold at Sotheby’s in New York in January 2019, being part of the Anne & Frederick Vogel III Collection, Lot 805. This was made in London in 1698 by Ralph Leeke and was engraved with a later inscription. This piece made $16,250 dollars plus the buyer’s premium.
