The Forks are all modelled in the Hanoverian Pattern with three prongs. The top of each stem is engraved with a contemporary Scottish Crest, with the Coronet of an Earl above, and the Motto At Spes Infracta - But hope is undaunted below. Table forks from this date are extremely rare from Scotland. Each piece is of a good gauge and colour. The Crest and Motto are those of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun, 1704-1781, son of Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun and Lady Henrietta Johnstone. John Hope succeeded to the title as 2nd Earl of Hopetoun in 1742. His principal Seat was Hopetoun House, near South Queensferry, Scotland.
