A William III Britannia Standard Squeeze Action Spice Box made in London Circa 1697 by Thomas Pritchard.

Sold

The Box is of oval form with two side lugs.  The base is engraved with pluming foliate scrolls and the sides with a band of stylised arrowheads.  The cover, however, is decorated with a most unusual urban scene with church, towers and bridge with flowing river.  The box is in excellent condition and is engraved on the inside of the cover with the contemporary scratch initials TL.  The inside of the base is marked with TR, with a crown above, this being the Britannia standard mark of Thomas Pritchard.  These boxes were used for carrying around exotic spices, which were a great symbol of wealth to be seen using when out.
