This very rare piece stands on three cast paw feet, which are attached to the main body with detailed lion mask mouldings. The elongated main body has a shaped rim and slightly baluster form and is finely chased with floral and foliate garlands, on a matted ground, with linear scroll work above. A beautifully detailed serpent is coiled around the scroll handle and a dogs head moulding can be seen below, where the handle meets the main body. This piece is of an unusual size and is in quite excellent condition, displaying a crisp set of marks on the base. It is also of a very good weight and gauge.
John Pollock was one of the finest Jug makers of the 18th century and his work is of exceptional quality and much sought after, however little survives. His distinctive mark of JP in a heart shaped punch was entered in 1739, and he had workshops in Long Acre, Covent Garden, when this piece was made.
