The Vinaigrette is broad rectangular in form with a serpentine shaped edge and protruding thumb piece. The sides and base are engraved with pluming scroll work on a scratch engraved ground. The base also displays a cartouche engraved with a set of contemporary script initials. The cover is engraved with a very rare view of the Liverpool Collegiate School which was an all boys grammar school, in the English port city of Liverpool. The Collegiate was designed in the Tudor Gothic style by the architect of the citys St Georges Hall, Harvey Lonsdale Elmes. The foundation stone was laid in 1840 and the Liverpool Collegiate Institution was opened by William Gladstone on 6th January, 1843. The interior is finely gilded and well marked and the grille is pierced and engraved with feathery scrolls around a flower head.
