This extremely rare piece has a plain triangular shaped blade, with raying shell moulding where it is attached to the handle. The silver section of the handle is decorated with feather edge borders and unusual trailing foliate motifs. The end of the handle is made of beautifully turned green stained ivory. The blade is also engraved with a contemporary script initial, below a Bishops Mitre, so this piece has a very interesting and important provenance attached to it. The Spade is marked at the top of the blade. Butter Spades are rare from England, however this is the first time we have seen an Irish example.
