The Straining Spoon has an unusually long Celtic Point handle, which is decorated with an outer bright-cut border, Irish Star motif and oval cartouche, containing a contemporary script initial. The spoon displays a pierced central division for straining and is engraved along the top with bright cut designs. This example is in excellent condition and is very well marked. The function of the straining spoon was for the serving of vegetables, where juice had to be separated from solids. Most examples of these scarce spoons date from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, a good proportion being found in Ireland.
