The Bougie Box is circular in form with a hinged cover, however this example is unusually pierced out all over with beautiful pluming scrolls, quatrefoil motifs and geometric patterns in square frames.  The sides, base and cover display reeded borders and a shaped swing extinguisher on the cover.  This example has a shaped carrying handle modelled as a buckle.  The Bougie Box is in excellent condition and is marked on the base and cover with the maker's mark of James Phipps, who was a very fine box maker.  The base is also beautifully engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a tied ribbon and floral garland cartouche.  This is all surrounded by the contemporary inscription, "The Gift of Mary Carpenter to her Nephew Phillip Roe, In Memory of a friend, Wm Chas Lock."  Bougie Boxes contained a slow burning coiled wax taper which would have been lit and the wax used to seal letters.  These were often used when travelling.
