It is most unusual to find silver mounted wooden candlesticks, as they are more often mounted with brass fittings.  The circular base and shaft are beautifully shaped and carved with lobing, in sizes, and plain horizontal bands.  The flared silver candle sockets are decorated with flat fluting above a beaded band and horizontal engraved band of herring bone design.  The circular, pull off, nozzle displays an outer reeded border.  The silver fittings can be unscrewed from the wooden candlesticks and are marked underneath with the maker’s mark and sterling mark.  The nozzles are both marked with the sterling mark, one also with the maker’s mark.  The maker’s mark shown was entered by Smith & Sharp in 1780 and, as there is no King’s Head Duty mark, we can accurately date them as being made circa 1780-83.  Both are in excellent condition.

Height: 12 inches, 30 cm.

Base Diameter: 4.5 inches, 11.25 cm.
