Joseph Angel is considered an exceptional silversmith and very much worked in the circle of Paul Storr.  This piece certainly has a Storr feel to the design and has a tapering "Can" shaped body, with herring bone band at the rim and base.  The main body displays a wide band in high relief depicting a detailed rural landscape with game birds, a castle with flag blowing from the turrets, and a cottage with birds swooping above.  The decoration has been executed to the highest standard and is in quite excellent condition.  The handle is also a work of art in itself, as it is of scroll form, with foliate decoration and a serpent coiled around its length.  The interior is palely gilded and the side displays a very crisp set of marks.  Joseph Angel was apprenticed to Henry Nutting and his first mark was entered in 1811.  He had workshops at 55, Compton Street, Clerkenwell, when this piece was made.  This piece would have been used out in the field when game hunting.
