The Wine Coaster is circular in form and the sides display a herring bone base rising to sides consisting of interlocking reeded arches, to which are applied a trailing band of cast fruiting vines. The sides rise to an everted egg and dart rim. The coaster has a silver base, which was the finest quality available, which is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest above and Motto engraved on a banner below. This is all surrounded by a cartouche of pluming scrolls. The Coaster is very well marked and in quite excellent condition. The coaster is the of the finest quality in terms of design and production, as would be expected from Joseph William Story. His work is scarce, but of superior quality, and he was operating from workshops in Charterhouse Lane when this example was made. The Arms and Crest are those of the Georges family of the Island of St. Christopher. There is a Sarah Georges on the Island of St. Kitts in 1732 and further references in the 20th century. The British settled there in the 1620s and it gained independence in 1983. It is best known for sugar cane production (having changed from tobacco in the 1640s). This design of wine coaster is rarely seen, however a similar pair are shown on page 328 of " The Guide to Antique Silver" by Peter Waldron.
