The Plates are circular in form and of exceptional weight, displaying a gadrooned border interspersed with anthemion motifs, as well as double Rococo shells flanked by acanthus foliage. This was a design of border which was widely used by John Bridge. Each piece is engraved with a contemporary Armorial on one side and an Imperial Crown on the other.
The Arms are those of Neeld, of Grittleton House, County Wiltshire, specifically for Joseph Neeld of Grittleton, M.P. born 1789. In 1831 he married Lady Caroline Mary, daughter of the 6th Earl of Shaftesbury. The Imperial Crown probably refers to Lady Carolines niece, descended from her sister Lady Harriet, who married Prince Rupert Zu Lowenstein. Joseph Neeld was the nephew of the great silversmith Phillip Rundell and inherited a vast fortune of £ 900,000 upon his death.
