The Candlesticks are cast and stand on a circular foot, with plain sunken well, and an outer band decorated with lobes, acanthus spears and raised beading. The baluster stems are decorated with horizontal beading, as well as the acanthus spears and lobing seen on the base. The shaped candle sockets display foliate motifs, plain garlands and beading and the circular pull-off nozzles have a raised outer beaded band. The Candlesticks are of the finest quality, being cast, and modelled in a beautiful restrained Classical form. Each is fully marked in the foot and with the sterling mark on the capital and the nozzle. They are in excellent condition.
Makepeace and Carter were exponents of the Neo Classical and they made fine pieces, however their work is scarce, as their partnership only lasted from January 1777 until December 1788. They had workshops in Bartholomew Close when these fine pieces were made.
