This very rare George III Cream Basket/Pail was made by the specialist basket maker Burrage Davenport. The Pail stands on a circular pedestal foot which is decorated with beading, as is the rim. The vase shaped main body is decorated with flat fluting, on the lower section, and most unusually displays four medallions, on the upper section, decorated with figures from Antiquity. The arched handle is decorated with reeding and the basket is very well marked in the foot. This example is in excellent condition and is an above average weight for a piece of this nature. These Pails are extremely rare, however they are usually decorated with two medallions, however this is unusually decorated with four. These medallions were widely used by Andrew Fogelberg, Master of the great Paul Storr, and are based on the Tassie paste gems which were popular in England at this date. A rare example.
