John Robins is a maker which we had not previously encountered making such items, however we have handled many pieces by him, as he was a prolific, quality, silversmith.  The Teether is of typical form with beautiful bright cut designs including flowerheads in diamonds, herring bone bands and floral sprays around the whistle and suspensory ring on the reverse.  The front displays a vacant prick dot cartouche and the ring on the reverse is decorated with reeding.  The scalloped end displays the original coral teether and the whistle hole is decorated with an unusual sunburst design.  This piece is in excellent condition and is marked on the main body with the date letter, sterling mark and duty mark and the mouth piece displays the clear maker's mark, with a crossed branch cartouche below.  The maker's mark is shown is A.G. Grimwade, " London Goldsmith's 1697-1837 - Their Marks and Lives" by Arthur Grimwade, Mark illustration number 3678.

Length: 4.25 inches, 10.63 cm.
