The Mustard Pot is unusually early in date, as pierced examples are not seen much before 1765.  This example is “Drum” shaped in form and the sides are finely pierced with stylised raying flower heads and roundels, enclosed by horizontal reeded bands.  The hinged cover also displays an outer reeded band and the centre is engraved with a contemporary Crest issuing from a Ducal Coronet.  This piece has an attractive ribbed scroll handle and cast pierced fan shaped thumb piece. The Mustard Pot is of a good thick gauge and is in excellent condition.  It has a blue glass liner and is fully marked on the base and with the maker’s mark and sterling mark on the underside of the cover.

Samuel Herbert and Company operated from workshops in Aldersgate Street and were specialist pierced workers who made very fine baskets, epergnes and mustard pots.
