The  Mustard Pot has a “Drum” form with a beaded band at the base and on the rim.  The sides are beautifully pierced and engraved in the Neo Classical tradition with a band of flower heads in ovals and trailing foliate motifs.  The central section is pierced with raying flower heads in roundels and the front is engraved with an initial “S” surrounded by a circular bright cut cartouche, all flanked by crossed herring bone bands.   The high domed cover is engraved with various bands of prick dot and bright cut designs and terminates in an acorn finial.  This piece has a scroll handle and blue glass liner.  The Mustard Pot is in excellent condition and is fully marked on the base and with the sterling mark on the underside of the cover. Also the base displays a section of engraving where the engraver has practiced with the engraving tools, always a nice original feature to see.

Charles Hougham was the son of the prolific silversmith Solomon Hougham and occupied workshops at 138 Aldersgate Street when this piece was made.  He had a reputation for the production of fine tea related silver and pretty pierced objects.
