BATH. An extremely rare William & Mary Trefid Spoon made in Bath circa 1693 by Matthew Reeve.

The Spoon is modelled in the Trefid style and the rat tail on the reverse of the bowl is decorated with lace work. The front of the stem is engraved with contemporary prick dot initials, and the date 1693. This piece is in excellent condition, has a good bowl, colour and fine gauge. Matthew Reeve came from a family of spoon makers and was elected to the Town Council and became Bailiff. He was, however, embroiled in aggravation and was accused of Treason in 1683. He was acquitted of Treason and in 1698 he lost his seat on the council, he having settled himself in Barbados. The stem is marked with his makers mark twice, as well as his small wares mark, which is shown on page 127, fig M127 of Kents book. This is the first time we have offered a Trefid Spoon from Bath, such are their scarcity.
