£1,950

The box and counters were most probably made in London circa 1680 and the box is tubular in form with filigree sides and a filigree pull-off cover, with rope work border.  This piece also possesses 18 original circular filigree counters, which is most unusual.  Both the box and the containers and in excellent condition.

Seventeenth century filigree counter boxes are rare, especially with their original counters.  Very few were made in the first place and very few have survived because of their fragile nature, however this one is in exceptional condition.  A Charles II Pouncet Box of a similar design was contained within the Lion Collection of boxes, one of the finest collections of boxes formed in the last 30 years.  It is shown on page 56 of the collection catalogue.  As you will appreciate this would have been made for an extremely wealthy individual during this period, to use when out gaming.
