This very rare piece is modelled as a reticule and has beautifully chased sides displaying scrolls, flower heads and foliate motifs. The cover displays a raised die struck view of the East Terrace at Windsor Castle towards the new gardens created for King George IV and the new terrace built by Jeffrey Wyatville as part of the re-build and re-sited Royal Apartments, largely completed by 1828. This example has a suspensory chain and unusually a chased finger ring, so that it could be worn on the finger. The interior is finely gilded and the grille is pierced and engraved with pluming scrolls and flower heads, all surrounded by a bright cut border. This piece is in excellent condition and is very well marked in the cover and in the base of the interior. The work of John Tonge is particularly scarce and is nearly always of the finest quality, comparable to that of Nathaniel Mills. Due to its rarity, a near identical example, by the same maker, is shown on the front cover of "Silver Boxes", by Eric Delieb. It is also shown in the book on Plate 234, page 147.
