The Vinaigrette is broad rectangular in form and is engraved with a most unusual design of chequered wriggle work and flower heads in roundels. The design is engraved on the cover and base and the sides display a wavy band of prick dot designs where the base and hinged cover meet. This is an unusual characteristic of quality of design. The box opens up to revel excellent interior gilding and a very rare "posy of flowers" grille, the first time we have seen this grille. The box is in excellent condition and is very well marked, including a sterling mark on the underside of the grille. John Douglas was a quite exceptional box maker, of innovative design, which is seen here with this example. His work is always executed to the finest standard, an example of which is the way he also polished the underside of the grille, as also seen with this piece.
