This very rare piece would have been used for serving butter or canapes on the dining table, however this is the first Irish example we have ever seen over the years and its design is quite different to those seen from England. The spade has a triangular blade with rounded end and shaped edge. The silver section of the handle is attached to the blade with a bi-furcated feather edge and shell moulding. The tubular section of the handle is decorated with reeding and is attached to a turned ivory end which is green stained with sycamore. This was a fashionable form of decoration during the last quarter of the eighteenth century. The spade is in quite excellent condition and is very well marked on the top of the blade.

LengthL 7.25 inches,18.13 cm.
Width of the blade, at the widest point: 1.75 inches, 4.38 cm.
