A very rare George III Neo Classical Dish Ring made in Dublin Circa 1775 by Joseph Jackson.

The Dish Ring is of typical form and shape, however the sides are unusually decorated in the Neo Classical manner with horizontal pails and roundels, displaying laurel leaf and berry garlands interspersed with paterae. The top and bottom of the sides are pierced with a section of scroll work, above a band of chased foliate motifs. Most unusually, however, is that the front shows a plain panel decorated with a Classical urn displaying beading and herring bone designs, flanked on either side by laurel leaf swags. The front of the urn is unusually engraved with a contemporary Crest. The maker's mark of Joseph Jackson is illustrated on page 640 of Jackson's Gold & Silver Marks and, most interestingly, the example of his work which is cited is a pierced dish ring. This leads us to conclude that he may have been a specialist in the production of these pieces. Joseph Jackson had workshops in Hoeys Court, Dublin, when this piece was made. He was a respected silversmith, as he was elected Warden of the Goldsmiths Company 1791-93 and Master 1795-96.
This is the first time we have seen a truly Neo Classical Dish Ring, especially with a panel on the front decorated in this manner, with a Classical urn and swags. It is possible that this was a special commission from Jackson's workshops.
