The Snuff Box is broad rectangular in form with rounded corners. The cover is cast and depicts the rare view of Hectors farewell to Andromache, all surrounded by a Rococo scroll frame. The sides are decorated with trailing vines and grapes and the base with raised oak sprays. The box is very well marked and has a finely gilded interior. The scene on the lid of this box, Hector and Andromache, appears to have been loosely based on a painting of the same subject by the Scottish artist, Gavin Hamilton (1723-1798). An identical box is contained within the Lion Collection and is illustrated in British Silver Boxes 1640-1840, No 227, page 202.
