This exceptionally rare piece is oval in form with deep sides decorated with a plain girdle around the centre. The sides and base display raying lobes, as does the inner section of the cover. The cover also displays an unusual outer border of pique bead work and the centre is inset with a silver disc cartouche engraved with the contemporary intials TA. This piece also has one of the very rare pierced " stand away" hinges, symmetrically pierced and displaying a wavy rim, which dates it to the late seventeenth century. This example is also most unusual as it has a squeeze action lock mechanism and is opened by squeezing the sides to release the lock. The box is in quite excellent condition and is a very rare survivor from this period, especially with the pierced hinge and the squeeze action. A similar example is shown in "Starting to Collect Silver" by John Luddington, the extract of which is attached.
