This exceptionally rare example is modelled in an unusual cylindrical form and the sides are inset with steel graters pierced with concentric designs. The top displays a very unusual deep bowl, with reeded arched handle, where the nutmeg could have been placed. The base displays a bottom opening, with exceptional hinge, which is engraved with the Prince of Wales feathers issuing from a Coronet. The base opening was used when the nutmegs needed to be stored, when the grater was not in use. This piece is of the finest quality and in most excellent condition. It is very well marked on the hinged base and on the mounts. As you will appreciate, this is a very rare design of kitchen nutmeg grater, however it has been modelled in a smaller size, so we conclude that a pocket sized piece was made in the form of a larger grater which were normally used in the kitchen. This is a particularly rare design, however a similar design is shown in the catalogue of the Robert & Meredith Green collection.

Height: 2.9 inches, 7.25 cm.
Base Diameter: 1.45 inches, 3.63 cm.
